SYF 2007
Tuesday, February 20, 2007
Hello dancers, I bet all of you must be sick and tired of hearing us stressing you guys about the Singapore Youth Festival dance concours.
But like what Mr Marvin Chan said, you have a choice. So you can choose to either listen to what I have to say, or just leave this page. :)
SYF is obviously a very notable event. So whatever kind of awards we receive will be known throughout singapore and in school. And it will relect on our school's reputation.
I know some of you are practicing hard, but please bear this in mind. If you're the best dancer during session, but you cannot handle yourself during competition, you are nothing.
As a dancer, we don't only have to do the dance. We have to really know the roots. If we're doing something that we dont really know, its pretty pointless. When u know the history and roots, OUR roots, we improve as dancers. Dancing is part of being a dancer, but BEING a dancer is another thing.
Just remember this, you are never too old to learn or too young to teach. Share your gospels and learn from one another. Your greatest fear is not that you are inadequate. Your greatest fear is that you are powerful beyond measure. Go forth and let your own light shine.
Also, never say 'it cannot be done'. Ask 'how can it be done.' There is power and genious in asking for possibilities. The difference between successful and non-successful people is just one word. ACTION. At the end of the day, your effot will definitely be seen.
And to those who had thoughts of skipping dance practices because you guys choose to hang out in town or with boyfriends/girlfriends. Better think twice and think before you act. Because if you have no commitment and passion in dancing, why join modern dance in the first place?
Try and put yourself in our shoes. I doubt you would want the 2nd generation of modern dance to go down the hill. And how would you feel if some of them do not even show some respect? And by missing in action for practice, I think it's pretty unfair for the other dancers who have the potential.
The reasons why we have warm ups/stretchings/exercises is owing to look better when we dance. And to also train our stamina. I'm sure you will go 'Ewwww, check out that flab!' when you're an audience and you see the fats on their arms swaying back and forth when they dance.
Alright. I've said what I wanted to say. The rest is up to you and for things to change, first you must change.
Oh yeah, rock steady didn't pioneer bboying, that's one very big misconception alot of people have. They're considered 2nd generation. the 1st generation were the Nigga Twins, Starchild La Rock, Salsoul Crew, The Bronx Boys etc.
The original raw bboying back then is just toprocks, and the toprocks don't look anything like the tops now, but the funkiness is there. Bboying started in 73, only around 74, 75 then people got on the floor and did some footwork. Rock Steady is kinda like the crew that took bboying to the next level. Backspins, 1990s, stuff like that is created by them.
And the rock steady that we know now, was the manhattan chapter not the original bronx Rock Steady. Crazy Legs took over Rock Steady from Jimmy Dee and Jojo, the original founders. Crazy Legs was part of another crew called rockwell association.
Legs wanted to keep Rock Steady and bboying alive, so when Jojo passed it on to him he changed his crew name from Rockwell to Rock Steady.
Just so thought you guys wanna know a lil somethin' somethin'.
Much love,
Jasmine
